Transition to Work: Gateway

The Gateway Programme provides ‘structured workplace learning’ for students who have an idea of a possible future job or career they wish to explore.  The programme offers senior students unpaid work experience to go hand in hand with studying industry-related credits towards NCEA qualifications and a Vocational Pathway.

Gateway students must display key work skills such as excellent communication, good time management, team player skills, organisational skills and self-motivation. Students need to be able to manage their college learning programme as well as studying Gateway unit standards at Level 2 and 3. Students are selected by interviews.

Some industries within the programme are:

Animal Care

Building & Construction

Business Administration

Education (incl ECE)

Electrical, Engineering

Furniture & Joinery

Hairdressing (incl Beauty Therapy)

Horticulture

Hospitality (incl Chefing)

Media

Printing & Design

Public Sector (incl Police, Fire, Customs, NZDF)

At the end of the Gateway Programme,  our students pathway on to tertiary study, part time work and/or gain apprenticeships.

Transition to Work: Trades Academy

A place at the Trades Academy allows year 11, 12 and 13 students to study at MIT and school, getting the benefits of both worlds and easing the transition between secondary and tertiary study.

In a fiercely competitive workplace, studying at the MIT Trades Academy could be your edge. With some hard work and dedication, students have the opportunity to finish school with a minimum of NCEA Level 2 and credits towards a nationally recognised trade qualification from MIT.

The Academy will also give you the opportunity to gain the sector related credits required to give you a vocational pathway award on your NCEA Level 2 qualification.
